“How long are we going to stand out here?” Needles grumbled from my shoulder. “We should at least peek through the windows and see if she’s inside.”

After much deliberation while flying into town, we decided to stakeout Ella Greenleaf. My position was of the six suspects, she had the most to gain with the death of Selma Greenleaf. Afterward, we’d go look for the moped out at Luna Lagoon.

“Needles is right,” Alex said. “The house is dark. I’m thinking she’s not here.”

“I’ll go down the chimney, look around, and be right back.”

Before we could caution him to be careful, he zipped away, his wings glowing midnight blue and silver.

“Is that really inconspicuous?” I murmured.

Alex chuckled. “Probably not.”

It didn’t take long before Needles returned. “It’s a mess in there! Looks like a tornado came through. She’s not in any of the rooms. You gotta come see this for yourselves.”

Looking both ways before crossing the street, Alex and I jogged over to the Greenleaf house. Pressing my forehead against the front window, I peered inside. There was a small light on in the back of the house, which I assumed was the kitchen area. But that back light gave off enough for me to see. Needles was right. It looked like a tornado had ripped through the house. Cushions were overturned, books were upended and lying scattered on the floor, and even the furniture had been tossed around. Whoever tore through the house did not care to be gentle.

“The kitchen is even worse,” Needle said as he dropped to my shoulder. “There are broken dishes everywhere. It’s like the person was in a rage.”

“So either Ella did this herself,” Alex said, “or someone broke in thinking Selma had stashed the Lunar Blossom at her home and they were determined to find it.”

“Does this mean someone took Ella?” I mused.

“Do you think you can do a locator spell for her?” Alex asked.

“I can try. Could be if someone did take her and that person can do magic, then they put a cloaking spell on her. But we’ll never know unless I try.”

Closing my eyes, I pictured Ella and whispered the locator spell GiGi and Mom had taught me when I was just a young witch.

My eyes popped open. “She’s out at Luna Lagoon.”

Alex shifted into his gargoyle form and gently scooped me in his arms, careful of his sharp talons. “Looks like we’re going to Luna Lagoon.”
